[Goku hums happily to himself as he sets his phone aside, properly cheered up now. Five pm is a long way away, but at least now he has something to look forward to. It'll be fun to hang out with Mio.

That is literally all the thought Goku puts into it before falling fast asleep. He rolls out of bed at around ten, gets dressed and goes through his normal daily routine. Food, working out, getting distracted by friends he runs into... At 4:45 pm he suddenly remembers the agreement and runs towards the cinema, barely remembering to swing by his room again to get changed. He bought new clothes, finally! Clean, untorn jeans and a green hoodie with a yin and yang symbol printed on the front. He probably didn't need to dress up, Goku thinks, but maybe it'll make Mio happy that he listened to her about having more than one outfit.

Speaking of which... Jogging up to the cinema entrance, Goku looks around for Mio, standing on his tip toes to try and look over the crowd. Man, there sure are a lot of couples here today!]

[Mio barely slept that night and is certain if she wasn't so nervous-excited she'd be feeling it a lot more right now. But the chocolates were made, if a bit lumpy in their box, and she'd bought new clothes and shoes and definitely wasn't disappointed to see Goku in a hoodie and jeans. Meanwhile Mio was in a new skirt and top decorated with orange butterflies and her shoes even had small heels on them. She'd even put on make-up.

At least his clothes were new, so she felt bettr about that once she realizes. That had to mean something, right? Mio raises her hand in greeting as she approaches, the bag that held the box of chocolates held tightly in her other hand]

Goku! [Her heart feels like it's in her throat and despite herself she can't help but smile] Sorry, were you waiting long? The crowds are kind of big today...

[Oh, there she is! Goku freezes for a second when he sees her, confused by his stomach seemingly doing a backflip all of a sudden without his permission. It's just Mio! Mio looking... really nice! Not that she doesn't normally look nice, she's always really pretty, but today... Maybe it's just the orange butterflies distracting him. They're cute. Mio's cute.]

Um- no! I mean, yeah, they are! I wasn't waiting, I just- [Start over, Goku.] Hey, Mio! You look really pretty!

[Goku grins brightly. All right, now he's fine. ]

[She clasps her hands shyly behind her back and rocks on her heels a little] Really? [She grins, pleased enough with his attention and the compliment to brush away her earlier disappointments.] Thank you. I was hoping you'd notice!

Oh, um-- Here! Before I forget. [She thrusts the bag out to him now.] I.. made them myself. I hope you like them! If they're bad, just let me know, I'll just-- I don't know. Go buy some other ones or something I guess?

A-anyway, you don't have to try them right now! [But she still looks a bit anxiously expectant though.]

Huh? You did? Wow, Mio, thanks!

[What a nice, completely unexpected surprise! Goku lights up and eagerly takes the bag out of Mio's hands, opening it before she's even done talking.]

I didn't know you knew howta- [shoves a piece of chocolate in his face] ... cook! They're good! [Quickly eats a few more. At the very least, he looks like he's enjoying them.] You're not supposed ta take your own food in though so we gotta eat 'em now. Did you already have some?

[Mio practically glows with pride at his praise. He likes them!! But she also sort of figures that so long as they weren't a complete disaster he'd probably enjoy them anyway... Still, it's good to hear.]

That's what purses are for. [She shoulders her purse a little and grins] If you want to save it, we can just hide it in here, they don't check bags. Besides, if you eat them all at once won't you get a stomach ache...?

[Goku looks up from the almost empty bag, mouth full of chocolate, to look at Mio. Eyes wide. Cheeks full.]

... Dun think so. [They taste good, so he won't get sick, right...? Look, it's too late for regret at this point, Mio. The chocolate is gone. Goku is not going to savor your love.] We can get popcorn though?

[Not even close to the point, Goku.]

[Mio resists the urge to start slamming napkins into Goku's face or facepalm or...anything other than struggle to keep a straight face. This is it. This is the boy on whom she's decided to lay her affections. What was she thinking??

She sighs, a little, and looks exasperated, albeit amused] How many buckets of popcorn are we going to have to get, though? If we share I might not get any.

[She glances at the bag again and shakes her head. She supposes she should look at it as a good thing, that he just couldn't resist eating it all because he liked it so much and all, and really that thought does help! Nevermind that he probably would've scarfed down anything edible she'd brought.]

I'll make more some time. I'm still learning and getting the hang of actually making things, so you can be like...a guinea pig.

[What was she thinking? Really, Mio.]

We're getting dinner after, right? So one each should be okay! [And if Goku ends up stealing some of Mio's, well... At least their hands might brush against each other in a somewhat romantic way? At the promise of more food, Goku grins again.]

I'll eat anything you make, Mio! Everything you give me always tastes great!

[Because she's special. And also because she gives him things like doughnuts and chocolate.]

You're a bottomless pit. [But she laughs and shakes her head, bumping playfully against him as she moves past towards the theater.]

I'll show you how to make a few things too. Then maybe you can make me something one day-- assuming you don't just blow up the kitchen by accident or something!

[She's joking but now it's sort of a real concern now that she's voiced it out loud. Surely he wouldn't be that hopeless in the kitchen, right? Right??]

...What kinds of things do you like to eat the most anyhow? [And how long is she going to stand around listening to the list]

[Goku quickly pops the last few chocolates into his mouth and follows after Mio, bumping her shoulder back as he does. At least he takes the time to finish eating before he talks again.]

I've never blown the kitchen up! I can cook! ... Kinda.

[He knows how to use a microwave. He can boil water. He can make a sandwich. He's a spoiled brat and it's all Hakkai's fault.]

But I like dim sum and meat buns and pork chops and ribs and noodles and fried rice and lamb and- [save Mio.]

Making instant ramen doesn't count as cooking.

[Hakkai is the reason no one can have nice things. Even in an entirely different universe he's making life difficult for everyone and probably laughing about it.

Her face falls as she instantly realizes her mistake and she waves her hands furiously to get him to stop] I said most! If you had to pick one or two foods only, which would they be?!

It does so! An' I can make other things! Like... salad!

[Hakkai has secretly been grooming all his friends to be dependent on him for their daily needs for years, so that they can never leave him and must adhere to his every whim. Unfortunately, he didn't take otherworldly kidnapping into account, otherwise he probably would have made Goku learn how to make hot pot or something.]

An' I couldn't pick just one food, Mio! I'd starve! [That's how food works, right?] Um, uh- if I pick meat buns, can I still have spare ribs? And sweet n' sour chicken? And beef stew? What about stuff like fruit, that's okay right?

That doesn't count either! [Jesus, Goku is hopeless, but Mio's laughing about it anyhow.

And the laughter kind of trails off into resignation. Oh geez.] That's not-- [How it works. At all. That's not how any of this works. That's way more than two can't he count?? ????]

Nevermind. You really don't have a favorite food? I guess that means if I make anything it'll be fine, but... [She's a little huffy that she can't pick one 'ultimate' food to master or anything.] How are you not the size of a house with all you eat? [Teach her your ways...]

Mm, it's more like... [Give Goku a moment to consider his deep feelings for food. They're still in line to buy tickets or something anyway.] ... I really, really like food, y'know? Because I'm hungry all the time. Some stuff tastes bad but nearly everythin' tastes good and feels good when you eat it, so I like everything.

[Half the joy of eating for Goku is the process of getting hungry, sating his hunger and then getting hungry all over again. Basically the definition of gluttony. The other half is just delicious food.]

I know I'll like anything you make me, Mio. [Because it will be food and also Mio. Mio's great.] And all you've gotta do is exercise, right? That's all I do!

What a pure response... [How are you real, Goku. Mio shakes her head, smiling faintly.

His comments about liking her food get her to blush and she waves a hand as if to dismiss her own embarrassment. She tries not to read into it--coming from goku, it doesn't mean much. He'd like it if anyone made it]

I used to do dance, actually... [This is more or less canon if you go by Word of God. Either way Mio trails off a little, reminiscing, before she returns her attention to a more important matter:] Do you have a movie in mind? [They probably should've decided this already. Oops.]

I'm just hungry. [YOU JUST HAD CHOCOLATES, GOKU how is he real, indeed.

Dancing sounds like fun though, and he kind of wants to see Mio doing it. She'd probably look really pretty. Cheeks a little pink, Goku shrugs and looks up at the board listing all the movies showing today.]

Um, I dunno! I didn't think about that part! [He is the worst at planning dates.] I really just wanted to hang out with you, Mio. I don't mind what we watch.

[Feel free to read into that, Mio.]

And you still wanted popcorn too, right? [Her wallet is crying.

She opens and closes her mouth a couple times before making a strangled noise. First of all, what the fuck. Second, this meant she'd have to figure something out. Probably nothing straight romance or romantic-comedy or something like that. She doesn't think Goku would like something like that, or that he'd get bored with it pretty quickly. So...

There's a couple action movies. One with some superheroes and such are probably more to his liking--and Mio doesn't mind them herself. As much as her heart pounds at the fact he just wants to spend time with her, she doesn't want him getting bored or anything either and regretting it or something look these are important things to think about.

She twists her hands around the strap of her purse and mumbles something unintelligible before they get up to the ticket window and she can order two tickets. Thankfully, the more romance-inclined movies are the ones selling like crazy and there's still plenty for what she chose.]

I'm kind of surprised they were showing a horror movie... [Mio wrinkles her nose in distaste though.] Well, I guess it makes sense though. It's a good excuse to get closer to someone. [But no thanks she'd rather not have more ptsd-style flashbacks or something.

And considering Goku seems oblivious to the fact this is a date-date, Mio's observations probably don't make a lot of sense but WHATEVER]

Yeah! We gotta get popcorn! [Look, it's fine, it's his turn to pay. This time. When it's Mio's turn, she can be sure to pick an all-you-can-eat restaurant.

Goku bounces eagerly next to Mio, thinking about popcorn and all the other snacks they can get, while he looks up at the list of movies. He doesn't recognise any of the names so they're next to meaningless to him. Mio can pick.]

Closer? But everyone's already sittin' next to each other, right? [It's not like anyone is going to do anything indecent in a movie theatre.] Um, but I don't really wanna watch a scary movie anyway... Is there one with lots of fighting?

[If it's not food...]

[She eyes the movies--none are familiar to her either--but she gives Goku a sort of 'I got this' wave and orders two tickets for one of the more action-y superhero-y movies. Something about guardians of something. Or maybe it's Security of Space. Whatever.

It's only then that she gives Goku a weird sort of look, like he's the one talking crazy here.] Well, yeah, but... Sometimes they want to get closer? It's a good excuse for the guy to put his arm around the girl, or for her to cuddle up to him, or something.

[She's starting to get a sinking feeling that Goku has no idea what's going on here.]

[There's a big explosion on the poster which is enough to make Goku happy. He's such a boy.

Because he's such a boy, he looks at Mio like he has no idea what's going on here.] Really? People do that?

[It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Goku doesn't have much dating experience.]

... Do you wanna do that?

[Because he doesn't mind.]

[His lack of experience isn't a surprise. His lack of subtly shouldn't really be either and yet...

Her face turns bright red.] Y-you're only supposed to when it's with someone you really like!

What? You don't like me? [So offended!] I like you, we're friends-

[You can practically see something clicking behind Goku's eyes as he pauses. Oh. Oh. His face goes equally red.]

Oh, you mean like- oh, okay, so- um. [What does he do what does he say what's the answer-] ... Do you wanna go get the popcorn now?

[Nailed it.]

Of course I like you! Isn't that obvious?

[But. Ah. She goes quiet, expression somewhere between embarrassed and disappointed, and looks away. She tucks her hair behind her ear and huffs out a breath.]

...Yeah, fine. And you'll probably want a lot of snacks too, right? ...Just try not to clean out the whole place, my wallet will cry.

[he fucked up he fucked up he fucked up]

Um, nah, I'll pay! Whatever you want too! [Food will make it better, right? Food nearly always makes it better.] I mean, because it was my idea and... everything...

[Ugh, he doesn't even know how he fucked up. They both like each other! They're friends! So, what's the problem? He awkwardly takes Mio's hand to guide her towards the concession stand. Please let food make it better.]

[This is really not the time to start an argument or to get heated at each other or anything, but they're still young enough that Mio's not thinking with her head so much.

Though she does, at least, appreciate his attempts to make it right with money. Always a good way to go.]

Goku, do you know what day it is?

Huh?

[Goku keeps trying to guide Mio towards the concession stand. Food and fighting are all he knows about and he doubts he can punch his way out of this one. Well, I mean, he could. But that's probably a bad idea.]

It's- uh- Wednesday, right? I think?

[Yeah, Mio, your boy is oblivious.]

[Mio digs her heels in to stare at him expectantly, but when he doesn't continue her gaze shifts upwards as if quietly asking for strength.]

It's Valentine's Day. [A pause as a thought occurs to her] ...Do they even have Valentine's Day where you're from?

[They probably do, in weirdly anachronistic China. Goku still looks confused for a minute.]

Valentine's Day? Isn't that the really sappy one with flowers and chocolate- [Wait. Wait. Goku freezes.] ... Aaah! Mio, I'm sorry, I didn't- was I supposed ta get ya chocolate too, or flowers, or something-

[Fuck, no wonder she's mad. She got him fancy chocolates that tasted real good and he couldn't even get her flowers. But wait, isn't that just for couples? None of his other friends ever got him anything. But he's never really been friends with a girl before either. Goku looks back and forth frantically, looking for something to give Mio.]

Um... Ah... Aw, man...

That's not the point! [She manages not to raise her voice at her snap, waving her hand in irritated dismissal] I don't care about a gift! I thought--

[She goes quiet and chews on her bottom lip, scuffing her foot a little against the ground as she sighs.]

...I thought you knew what it was, so I thought... You were asking me out when you texted me. Like, on a... date. [Her face burns red and she's definitely sulking, embarrassed and grumbling] I don't want an obligation gift anyhow.

[Goku is halfway through pulling off his nice new hoodie in a panic when Mio says she doesn't care about the gift. Okay. That's a relief. He only has so many items of clothing on board this space ship (or anywhere, to be honest).]

You wanted to go on a date? [Oh. Oh. Goku turns red as well as the implications of that set in.] Sorry... I didn't think about...

[He never thinks about that stuff, for the most part. Mio is pretty and great and smells nice but it didn't even occur to him that she might want to go on a date. Figures he would ask her out by accident. ]

... I woulda done something nicer if I'd known it was a date.

[He has no experience with this but he's sure there's more to a date than just showing up. Maybe flowers. Damn it, where's Gojyo when you actually need him?]

[She feels fairly certain that her face is going to be cherry-red for the foreseeable future.]

Well. I just-- [Talking about feelings is hard, dammit. She shifts her purse on her shoulder and plays with the strap to distract herself] I don't want to go on dates if... I mean, if you don't want to date me, if you don't like me like that. [Mio trails off uncertainly, before she heaves a sigh.]

Ugh! I like you, okay!? I really like you! [thERE. NAILED IT.] So, I-- You know! I want to go on dates with you and... and hold your hand and stuff like that! [She's a young adult, really.]

[Goku is just a tomato. He is no longer a boy or a monkey, just a giant tomato with a gold diadem. Or, at least, that's certainly what he looks like. ]

I like you- I mean, I just- [The only girl he'd ever done anything with was Pippi and he hadn't even really understood what was happening then until it was over. Mio's wonderful and he likes her a lot, but what's he supposed to do now? What's the difference between liking someone and liking them "like that"? What if something bad happens? This feels kind of scary all of a sudden.]

... Holding hands sounds nice.

[He can handle that much. It doesn't seem likely to make anyone explode, at least.]

[Mio looks at him a moment, sullen and uncertain. For the longest time it had been herself and her sister-- a sister who had monopolized her time and attention to the point she'd barely been able to look at anyone else, let alone spend time with them. It's all new and strange territory, but she figures for Goku it must be too.

So... At least they're going into this blind, but together??

It seems kind of awkward to just go into cutesy gestures of affection now though after all of that, but Mio takes a breath and nods. It still takes her another couple of seconds to get up the courage to reach out and take his hand though, her head bowed like she's a little afraid to look at him.

...After a moment she sort of laughs, shakes her head, and her hold on his hand eases into something more comfortable instead of stiff and uncertain] ...We're...a disaster..

[It's probably a good thing that Mio ends up looking away from Goku, because his very focused stare is probably a little off-putting. He's uncertain too, but his fingers curl gently around Mio's as soon as she takes his hand. He meant it when he said it sounded nice. This kind of affection he can understand.

When she laughs, he does too and tightens his grip.] I dunno. Nothin' bad's happened yet. [Yet. But it doesn't count as a disaster until there's blood on the floor or something is on fire.

They'll be fine. They're strong and facing this together, so even disasters can be dealt with. Goku grins, bright and warm like the sun.] Mio, you're really strange!

Wha-- [She laughs again, despite herself and the situation, but she can't really keep herself mad at him for long.]

I'm strange? You're the one who's all, 'nothing bad's happened yet!' What do you think is going to happen? It's just holding a hand! [She huffs a little and gives his hand a tug towards the concessions]

Come on, let's get popcorn and stuff and into the movie before I totally change my mind. Sheesh... You have no idea how to handle girls... [And yet he's still doing better than gojyo]
