[That's right, he still thinks he's going to end up going back to his future, after Black is defeated. There might be some people left alive, and if there are he needs to protect them.

Would it make it worse if he talked to me?

[Vegeta pauses for a moment at that, glaring at Trunks while very still. Now that it's been brought up he actually takes a second to think about it and that's all the time he needs to reach a conclusion. He's not keen on letting Trunks go back to his timeline. They're certainly not sending him back alone. If Trunks had some other important friends to return to, it would be one thing, but somehow Vegeta doubts that's the case.]

... We can discuss that later. ["Hey, dad, I'm leaving now." "No." "Okay."]

He'll have to talk to you eventually. [What with you living here forever.] You're different enough that he should adjust easy enough.

[Just because everyone he cares about is dead in his timeline doesn't mean he doesn't have a responsibility to those who are left. If he doesn't go, who's going to protect them if someone else shows up keen on destroying everything (and fail miserably)?

Trunks looks at his father--he doesn't know what is going through Vegeta's head, but he thinks he might be able to guess.]

[As far as Vegeta's concerned, Trunks doesn't owe those people shit. He's given enough of his life to protecting them. Let his son have some happiness please.]

You'll have time to get used to each other. [Yup, he's making up his mind...] We all managed when you were here before.

[Bulma will totally agree with him and it's what the Bulma of that timeline would have wanted he's sure. Trunks will get used to it, he's probably been bugging them for a brother anyway. And Trunks has time travelled enough at this point that who even cares if he just stays put in this timeline? Yes, this will totally work.]

[He's not quite sure how far back he came. He doesn't remember plugging in the temporal coordinates and he didn't exactly get a look at the display since he was unconscious shortly after.]

Nearly eleven. [MAYBE??? I can't keep track of Super's timeline. Let's say 11.] Don't expect much maturity out of him though. He's a brat.

... How long has it been for you? [Saiyan ages are hard to tell at a glance, but Trunks doesn't look much older. Certainly not ten years older.]

[I also can't keep track of Super's timeline. Therefore 11 is perfectly acceptable. Boy, he's short for his age isn't he?]

I wasn't easy to deal with at that age either.

[Training in high gravity is probably pretty rough on a growing skeleton, just saiyan.

He blinks at the jab, then laughs softly.]

[He is also pretty vulnerable and subdued right now, that doesn't help.]

There weren't exactly a lot of resources to go around. We all had to adapt.

[If he eats any more he's pretty sure he's going to be sick, and that won't help.]

You won't heal if you don't eat and if you're hungry you won't be able to maintain your energy.

[Saiyan lectures. Fighting fixes everything and everything it doesn't fix can be fixed by eating. But if Trunks isn't hungry, forcing food down probably won't help.]

... Keep eating small doses at a time until you get your appetite back.

[It's hard not to. Going Super had utterly drained him, and he'd been weaker in that state than he was used to being. (Though even when he was at full strength, he hadn't been able to fight Black.)

Still, Vegeta's concern, directly experienced, is something very new. When he was here last, he was fairly sure his father wouldn't even be in the room. It's strange. Nice, but strange.]

What's happened since I was here last?

[He desperately doesn't want to talk about himself anymore, give him an out please.]

[Eventually Trunks is going to have to consider if his father was actually swapped out for a much nicer copy. White Vegeta, if you will. Then he's going to have to decide if it's worth trying to find the original.

Vegeta nods and opens his mouth to respond- but then hesitates. A lot has happened, on a large scale and a smaller. He's not sure if he wants to start things off by telling Trunks that, in the timeline he worked so hard to protect, the Earth has technically blown up twice.] ... A lot.

Kakarrot's alive again, as you probably figured out. [Uh, good things, things that will make Trunks happy] Your mother and I got married a few years after you left. [Good things good things- oh!] I surpassed Kakarrot. [Sort of. For a bit. It's iffy which of them is stronger now, which Vegeta honestly prefers in a way.] You missed a tournament between fighters from this universe and another, but there's a bigger one coming up soon.

[Vegeta covering all the important points of the past ten years or so.]

[He probably should, but he's kind of enjoying this honestly.

He would be more troubled by the blowing up if everything had stayed that way, but since this timeline has Dragonballs, that quite obviously can be rectified.]

I'm sort of glad he wasn't in here when I woke up. I would have attacked him.

[After all, he hadn't expected Goku to be alive--last he knew he'd declined to be wished back. He can't guarantee as it is that he won't be uncomfortable around Goku.

He's sure there's been more than that. Everything his father has covered so far has been either good or neutral at worst, and surely there's been trouble since he's been back. Goku being alive might as well be proof of that.

The last part gives him pause. Universes? Surely that doesn't mean between life and the afterlife, the wording is extremely precise. And it's not between timelines either. So there's another level of reality that they've discovered now?

Of course he's interested in that. (As a bonus, it should be a fairly harmless conversation topic. No more struggling not to further traumatize him, Vegeta.)]

[Watching Trunks attack Goku should be great to watch. Just give Vegeta enough warning so he can go make popcorn. Goku can take a punch (or ten), it's fine.]

There are apparently twelve different universes at the moment. This is Universe 7. [Ugh, he's going to have to explain Beerus and everything- shit does he have to explain the Kais? Trunks, you've missed way too much.] You wouldn't know Lord Beerus, but he is the God of Destruction of our universe and... an acquaintance. [Goku or Bulma might say "friend", but nervously.] he had a quarrel with the God of Destruction for Universe 6- something about the food on our Earth being better than Universe 6's Earth- and they decided to settle it with a tournament for their greatest fighters.

Obviously I was selected to represent Universe 7. [... As well as Goku, Piccolo and Monaka. But they're less important.]

[He wasn't even dead long enough to meet any of the Kais. He has no idea. And he looks it--it's interesting, but a lot of information to wrap his head around.]

[He says without a trace of irony. His daddy is the strongest ever.]

...though for it to be over food is...something.

[Blasphemy, a Saiyan not making everything about food.]

[Good boy, Trunks. Daddy is always the best.]

They're rather... temperamental. [Said Vegeta. So you know they must be bad.]

[Yeah...that's bad. Though to be fair, you seem to have gotten a lot more level-headed than the last time he saw you.

It's kind of weird. Now that he's having the nice conversation with his father that he's always dreamed of, he doesn't know what to do with it. He's pretty sure this is already more time that they've spent talking than the entire last time he was in the past.]

[Helpless to keep up this part of the conversation. Gold star, boys, you win. Keep it up.]

[He'll lose his temper and start screaming eventually, it's just that right now he's a giant, tensely wound ball of emotions and the best way to deal with that is to force himself to stay calm.

The awkward silence reminds Vegeta of how little he actually spoke to his son the last time they were together. Every previous conversation that comes to mind involved him berating and insulting the boy. He's... fairly used to speaking to the younger version, but honestly there he just needs to sit back and let the boy talk a mile a minute in his direction with nothing but occasional nods and grunts from his father. There's not much experience for Vegeta to draw from here, is what I'm saying.

He stays silent for a long, awkward moment. Then he opens his mouth, closes it, and opens it again. Conversation, he can do it.] There was a saiyan from the other universe at the tournament. You would have liked him.

[Cabba's speeches about protecting his family and home might have reminded Vegeta of Future Trunks a little.]

[To be fair, Trunks has just gone a few months with only talking to his mother and Mai. And before the androids, he didn't exactly get a lot of practice either. He's generally quiet because of it. Bulma tended to fill the silence for him, and with Mai it was just companionable.

So you're both coming at this from terrible directions.]

There's Saiyans there?

[Gohan had told him once, what happened to Planet Vegeta. So it wasn't like he was completely uninformed. (Just mostly.)]

...Maybe if they're at the next tournament you mentioned, if I haven't gone back by then...

[Haha, he keeps talking like that's going to happen.]

Their planet was never destroyed.

[Either... of their planets.... The saiyan race doesn't have a great track record for keeping the planets they live on un-exploded.

Vegeta's stood with his arms crossed as usual when Trunks mentions the possibility of him going back. He grip on his arm tightens noticeably and he tenses up (even more) for a moment.]

... You can fight with us and meet him then. [Because he will definitely still be here.] That is, if I decide you're strong enough to when the time comes.

[Look forward to training with papa again, Trunks...]

[Unlike last time, this time he's actually looking at his father when he tenses--when his grip tightens. And Trunks hasn't lived as long as he has by being unobservant.]

I have to go back eventually.

[He says, calmly. Because as far as he's concerned it's not an option not to. He hasn't even considered it. He promised his mother that he would.]

You don't have to go anywhere.

[Vegeta's voice is firm, but... not as calm as he's been trying to sound so far. Letting Trunks leave- especially alone- is not an option. ]

[It's true--look at how well that's worked out for him.]

[Extended stays in this timeline? He was here for weeks before, but that's not like staying for months, or years, or permanently. He doesn't know what that will do.

Plus, he made a promise. He has to protect whoever's left.

Really, Vegeta's rising not-calm is more normal to him, so he's not yet intimidated.]
